For Shopify vs WooCommerce, shortlist Shopify when you want a hosted platform and your required store journey fits its proposed plan and integrations. Shortlist WooCommerce when WordPress, control over code and hosting matter, and you have a named maintenance owner. Choose after testing Arabic checkout and payment eligibility, then compare operating costs for the same scope.

This guide helps Saudi businesses compare implementation proposals for the two platforms. We checked the official sources on 25 October 2026; time-sensitive descriptions reflect those sources as of October 2026. The test exercises below are recommendations for evaluating suppliers, with no claimed client results or projected savings.

Start with who operates the finished store and who handles changes. As of October 2026, Shopify's domain and hosting page confirms that its plans include hosting. The official WooCommerce overview describes its WordPress foundation and the merchant's control over the site, code and data. Turn those differences into a responsibility list beside the proposed tools.

Ask a supplier to demonstrate ordinary staff tasks: editing an Arabic product description, reviewing an order and investigating a refund. Use the access levels you expect staff to receive. A feature list cannot show whether your operations colleague can resolve an exception or must contact the developer for each step.

CustomisationTheme, plan and app limits against your briefExtensions, custom changes and their maintenance owner
Arabic and EnglishThe selected theme, checkout and messages in both languagesThe selected theme, extensions and translations in both languages
PaymentsMerchant eligibility and a working provider connectionMerchant eligibility and a compatible gateway extension

Treat each row as evidence to request. If Salla or Zid remains on your shortlist, start with the Saudi hosted-platform comparison. The decision here concerns Shopify and WooCommerce once both have become serious candidates, rather than a general ranking of store platforms.

Confirm your merchant account's eligibility before approving the platform integration. As of October 2026, Saudi Arabia does not appear on the Shopify Payments supported-country list. Shopify directs businesses in an unlisted country to a third-party provider. That limitation concerns its payment service; it does not mean a Saudi business cannot use Shopify for its store.

Give the payment provider your business activity, settlement requirements and requested methods. Obtain written confirmation for the proposed account and integration. Keep that confirmation separate from the developer's estimate: an extension listing does not establish approval for your business or every payment method you need.

Request a successful test order, a declined attempt and a cancellation or refund, where the test environment permits them. Check both the customer's screen and the staff view. Record order identifiers and status changes. Ask who investigates when a customer returns from payment but the store has not yet received confirmation.

Use our gateway approval and settlement checklist to prepare the provider questions. For this platform comparison, the required evidence is a working purchase journey and a clear owner for failures. Include any unresolved provider dependency in the proposal before you approve final design work.

Test a complete Arabic purchase and repeat it in English using the same products. Shopify's 2 October 2026 language update announced improved Arabic support across its admin and storefronts, including checkout, customer accounts and Horizon themes. As of October 2026, you should still inspect the particular theme, apps and content proposed for your store.

Prepare fictional but representative data: a long Arabic product name, a Latin SKU and an address containing a building number. Enter it on a narrow screen with enlarged text. Check field order, number direction and whether an error message remains readable while the keyboard is open.

For WooCommerce, request the same exercise using the actual theme and extensions in the proposal. Open the confirmation email and customer account page as well as the storefront. Add missing translation or layout work to the scope, with an owner for the copy and another for verifying the finished behaviour.

Define your language-switching expectation. Should the cart and selected options remain intact? Put the expected outcome into the acceptance checklist and run it in both demonstrations. Test keyboard navigation and field labels too. These checks give your receiving team something concrete to accept against instead of the phrase “supports Arabic.”

Compare implementation and operation over the same period, using the same assumptions. As of October 2026, Shopify's billing guide distinguishes recurring, usage-based and one-time charges. Ask the supplier to identify the charges that apply to your proposed store, with the source, quotation date and billing currency.

Create separate rows for design implementation, catalogue preparation, subscriptions, licences, hosting and support. Add payment and shipping charges from actual provider quotations. Mark missing amounts as awaiting a quote and name who will obtain it. A guessed figure makes the total look complete while leaving an unresolved purchasing decision underneath.

Use this worksheet formula: period cost = implementation + fixed charges during the period + usage charges + agreed support and changes. Supply order count and basket assumptions from your own planning, then test alternative scenarios. The formula organises quotes; it does not predict sales or establish a platform-specific saving.

Our guide to separating store setup and operating budgets helps arrange those categories. Ask for renewal terms after introductory offers and identify who owns each licence account. For a custom feature, request implementation and maintenance as separate lines so you can assess both commitments.

Follow the same test order from payment confirmation through fulfilment and cancellation, checking stock along the way. Choose a product with size or colour options and identify the system that owns the stock quantity. Ask the supplier what happens if an employee changes that quantity while an order is processing.

Provide one test address inside your agreed shipping coverage and another outside it. Review the customer message and displayed charge. Combine your planned discount with delivery, then examine cancellation after a shipping label has been created. The employee needs to know whether cancelling an order also requires action with the carrier.

For an inventory or accounting integration, document who creates the order identifier and which system owns the final status. Request a test of connection failure and recovery without a duplicate order. These are proposed acceptance cases, not promises that a particular connector covers them; agree which cases the integration handles and which remain manual.

Invite the operations colleague to perform the correction during the demonstration. If every exception requires developer intervention, discuss training and support before signing. Keep the procedure and test evidence so the receiving team can repeat the checks after changing an app or adding a carrier.

Name the person or supplier responsible for each layer you purchase. As of October 2026, the WooCommerce update guide recommends a current backup, staging tests and checks of the store's workflows. Translate that into an agreement: who tests a change, who approves it and who restores the store if necessary?

For Shopify, request responsibilities for the theme, apps, account settings and integration failures. Included hosting alone does not define your implementation supplier's obligations for those items. Ask for the support channel and scope, including the distinction between correcting a delivered fault and implementing a new request.

For WooCommerce, include hosting, the test environment, extension updates and backups in the responsibility list. Request a recovery exercise on a test copy and confirm that its owner can access the necessary files and data. Agree how the team will handle orders arriving around any proposed maintenance interruption.

Maintain an account and renewal register covering the domain, theme, extensions, gateway and messaging services. Keep core accounts under your business's ownership and grant suitable supplier access. Review the register during handover and when changing support providers, so a renewal notice does not remain in an account your team no longer uses.

Favour Shopify when the supplier proves your purchase journey within the proposed plan and apps, and you prefer a hosted platform with defined operational responsibilities. Favour WooCommerce when extending WordPress or changing code is a material requirement and your maintenance team demonstrates testing and recovery. These are selection criteria, with no universal winner implied.

Consider two illustrative briefs: a conventional product catalogue and a store with special configuration rules. For the first, request proof of the required journey in the proposed setup. For the second, begin with the hardest rule, such as preventing an invalid combination of product options. Make it a separate acceptance case before committing to the rest of the design.

Give each requirement a status: demonstrated, requires implementation or awaits third-party confirmation. Attach the evidence, owner and any quoted cost. If payment or a necessary operational step remains unproven, hold that part of the scope open until the supplier resolves it. A short evidence register makes differences between proposals easier to discuss.

Send one brief containing sample products, languages, currencies, the requested gateway, shipping requirements and named integrations. Include the test order and its acceptance conditions. Ask each supplier to state assumptions and exclusions, then identify anything needing a prototype before they can confirm a price.

Finish with a handover list: accounts and permissions, agreed design and code files, licences, staff procedures and test results. Name the reviewer for each item. Request a session in which your own team adds a product, processes an order and attempts a test refund, recording any missing instructions.

Practical takeaway: test the order and Arabic experience first, then choose using operational responsibilities and confirmed cost items. Keep a short decision record of accepted limitations and the reasons for your choice. For help evaluating Shopify vs WooCommerce, bring your requirements and available evidence to the discussion.
